I have been asked about chap in red with the very large rifle. One of the photos I took was of the explanatory board and I have included it above.
On reflection, I half remembered that the combat aircraft we call "Fighters" are called "Hunters" in German, "Jagdflugzeug". So my explanation for the chap in red, looks to me like a cartoon version of a hunter. If anyone has another idea, I am open to persuasion.
Thanks Pierre. I thought of the hunter connection but the red costume threw me. That and the strange blunderbuss type muzzle.
ReplyDeleteCher M le Poilu - I read somewhere that the 109E in the museum is a replica, and looking around online there are various art plates of Herman Graf's plane, presumably for modellers etc - looking just like the one at York, including the badge with the red jäger. I guess this was either a squadron badge or Herr Graf's personal logo. I don't know anything like enough to venture an opinion, of course.
ReplyDeleteCher Comrade Foy,
DeleteThe guide told us the Wellington bomber and the ME109 had not ever been flown as they were largely complete skeletons that required a number of parts from other aircraft. Not so much replicas, more of a cut and shut, two or more wrecks welded together.
