UNESCO Vauban List : Mont - Louis

This is no. 8 of my French to English translations of the historical descriptions on the UNESCO Vauban list.

MONT - LOUIS

The new fortified town was necessary to close a frontier passage with Spain. The building project was begun in 1679 and the fortifications completed in 1681. The planning of the town was completed in 1722. Most of the house building followed. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the fortified place was not updated but maintained, excepting the modifications of the parapets.. In 1887 - 1889, some detached works were completed at a distance, at more than 2000 m altitude. The citadel is still occupied by the Army.
