UNESCO Vauban List : Saint-Martin-De-Ré

Each Vauban site on the UNESCO list has a French language Historical Description. This is the 10th of my translations of the Descriptions.

SAINT-MARTIN-DE-RÉ

Vauban completed this project between 1681 and 1685. Vauban's citadel occupies the emplacement of a previous, short-lived citadel (1626 - 1628); it was built in 40 days. In 1875, the town sea-front was reinforced with traverse-shelters, Excepting this the fortifications were not modernised. The citadel became a State prison in 1873.
